Excerpts from the City of Evanston:
On Thursday, January 14, at approximately 1:07 p.m., Evanston firefighters were called to the 300 block of Dempster Street following a report of an automatic fire alarm in a multi-story residential building.
Upon arrival, the first responding units encountered moderate smoke and fire conditions on the third floor. Thanks to a swift and aggressive interior attack, combined with the activation of the building’s fire sprinklers, the fire was quickly brought under control and confined to the unit of origin within about ten minutes of the crew's arrival.
A middle-aged woman was found unresponsive inside the apartment, without a pulse or breathing. Firefighters immediately rescued her and initiated emergency resuscitation efforts on the scene. During transport to a local hospital, paramedics successfully revived her. The patient is currently being treated in the intensive care unit and is in stable condition.
Additional fire apparatus from neighboring communities assisted the Evanston Fire Department in maintaining station coverage while the main firefighting team worked to contain the blaze.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities.
