Excerpts from the City of Evanston:
On Thursday, January 14, at approximately 1:07 p.m., Evanston firefighters were called to the 300 block of Dempster Street after receiving a report of an automatic fire alarm in a multi-story residential building.
The first arriving units encountered significant smoke and active flames on the third floor. Thanks to a swift and aggressive interior attack combined with the activation of the building’s fire sprinklers, the fire was quickly brought under control within about 10 minutes of arrival. The blaze remained confined to the unit of origin, preventing further spread.
A middle-aged woman was found unresponsive inside the apartment, without a pulse and not breathing. Firefighters immediately extracted her from the scene and initiated emergency resuscitation efforts. During transport to a local hospital, paramedics successfully revived her. She is currently being treated in the intensive care unit.
Additional resources from neighboring fire departments were dispatched to support the Evanston Fire Department (EFD) during the incident, ensuring continued station coverage while crews focused on extinguishing the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation by local authorities. No other injuries have been reported at this time.
