Commissioner Nance-Holt was there as Chicago's mayor and a range of partners and stakeholders celebrated the grand opening of the Bauer Plummer Public Safety Training Center. This new facility is set to become a vital hub for first responders and a key asset for the West Side community.

On Wednesday, Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot joined Chicago Police Department Superintendent David O. Brown, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Annette Nance-Holt, Alderman Emma Mitts (37th Ward), Dr. Elizabeth Lockhart, and local community leaders at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the newly completed Public Safety Training Center (PSTC). The state-of-the-art center aims to equip emergency personnel with advanced training tools for responding to real-world emergencies, conducting investigations, and handling high-stakes tactical operations.
The PSTC includes a six-story tower designed to replicate various environments that firefighters face daily, such as apartment buildings, hotels, and office spaces. It also features an indoor and outdoor scenario village that mimics a typical four-way intersection, offering realistic training opportunities for emergency response teams.
Located on a 30.4-acre former rail yard that had been abandoned for over 40 years before the city acquired it in 2017, the site now serves as a model of urban renewal. In addition to the main academy building, the complex will soon be home to two minority-owned restaurants—Peach’s and Culvers—as well as a 27,000-square-foot Boys and Girls Club, all set to open this summer. These businesses are expected to bring economic growth and stability to the neighborhood.
Together, the PSTC, the Boys and Girls Club, and the new restaurants represent over $170 million in combined public and private investment. The center is also located between two Invest South/West initiatives—Austin and West Humboldt Park—that are projected to bring $95 million in future private investments. This development is expected to create a vibrant corridor connecting these neighborhoods, fostering new businesses, job opportunities, and improved housing options for residents.
