The Chicago Tribune recently published an article that follows up on a prior post about a controversial decision made by the city of Des Plaines to cancel an ambulance purchase that had previously been approved. The story highlights growing concerns among some local officials about the legitimacy of the reversal.
Three city aldermen—Patricia Haugeberg, Dick Sayad, and Jim Brookman—are now pushing for an independent legal review of the decision to rescind the ambulance purchase. Their request was included in documents released ahead of the next City Council meeting. The aldermen are seeking clarity on whether the council’s actions were within its authority.
The original approval of the ambulance purchase came after a heated debate over the design of the exhaust system. Specifically, the discussion centered on whether the exhaust pipe should be positioned underneath the ambulance (a horizontal system) or above it (a vertical system). Brookman, a former firefighter, argued that the horizontal system posed a risk to both emergency responders and patients due to potential exposure to harmful fumes during long idling periods at emergency scenes.
Despite his concerns, the city’s fire chief, Alan Wax, expressed confidence in the current setup, stating that existing practices do not expose anyone to dangerous levels of exhaust. However, the council ultimately voted to cancel the purchase and opted for a different model with a vertical exhaust system.
Mayor Matt Bogusz supported the rescission, arguing that the decision was not a policy matter but rather an operational choice. He criticized the move as being "a solution in search of a problem" and urged the council to focus more on policy issues rather than technical details.
This ongoing debate has sparked a broader conversation about the role of the City Council and how it should handle such decisions in the future. With the aldermen now calling for a legal review, the situation shows no signs of slowing down.
Thanks, Dan.
