EU funds to develop new offshore transport vessels

Recently, the EU funded a new research project, CREATE 3S, with a total budget of 4.2 million euros, of which 2.5 million euros was provided by the European Union. The project convened a number of major companies engaged in offshore shipping and ship design, using advanced design and construction techniques to develop a new generation of offshore carriers to enhance the competitiveness of the European shipping and shipbuilding industry.

The ship type envisaged by CREATE 3S consists of two parts: the hull section and one or more large cargo loading sections. When the ship arrives at the port, it can quickly unload the cargo from the ship to the dock and prepare for the next round of transportation. CREATE 3S will be used for a variety of cargo transportation, including containers, bulk and liquid cargo (such as refined oil, chemicals and liquefied gases).

The most innovative content of the CREATE 3S project is the ability to load all cargo at once. Of course, for a ship type, there may be more than one cargo module—for example, loading multiple types of cargo on the same ship, and even bulk cargo and container transportation are feasible. The cargo unit that is unloaded at one time will be much larger than the current largest 45-foot or 20-foot container.

CREATE 3S will combine "standard ship design" with different trades and goods, while using advanced construction technology integrated with large-scale standard modules "industrialization", shipbuilding costs are expected to decrease, and delivery time will be shortened by approximately 10%. The new generation of ship types will also be operated using advanced simulation techniques.

With the rapid growth of trade between European countries, the European transportation industry has huge demand. Increasing the cost of roads and railways is high and offshore shipping is a transportation model with potential and little impact on the environment, so water freight is currently encouraged in Europe.
