Another addition to Division 10 is the Hinsdale Fire Department, a single-station fire department that serves the town of Hinsdale in DuPage County. Covering approximately 4.64 square miles, the department employs 26 career firefighters who respond to a wide range of emergencies. Their fleet includes two ambulances, three engine companies, and a tower ladder, ensuring they are well-equipped for both structural fires and technical rescues.
Hinsdale has long been known for its distinctive color scheme, one that is shared only with Carol Stream, another department within DuPage County. Both departments historically used bright yellow apparatus with black roofs, creating a striking visual identity that set them apart from surrounding areas. While Carol Stream transitioned to a black-over-red scheme several years ago, Hinsdale remained loyal to their original design—keeping all suppression vehicles in the black-over-yellow style for many years.
This tradition changed in 2008 when Hinsdale received their newest unit: a Spartan/Rosenbauer/Metz Raptor tower ladder. Unlike previous units, this aerial was painted in a black-over-red scheme, marking a shift from their traditional look. Interestingly, another local department—Countryside Fire Protection District in Division 4 (Lake County)—also operates a similar Raptor tower ladder. However, their unit is built on an HME chassis and features a white roof, making it visually distinct from Hinsdale’s.
The change in Hinsdale’s color scheme has sparked some nostalgia among longtime residents and firefighters, as the old yellow-and-black design was a recognizable symbol of the department. While the new paint job follows a more traditional "Chicago-style" aesthetic, it also signals a modernization effort that aligns the department with broader regional trends.
This color scheme is unique to the area but does not appear to be around for too much longer.
