Another addition to Division 10 is the Hinsdale Fire Department, a single-station department that serves the town of Hinsdale, located in DuPage County. Covering approximately 4.64 square miles, the department employs 26 career firefighters. They operate two ambulances, three fire engines, and a tower ladder, providing essential emergency services to the community. What makes Hinsdale stand out is its distinctive color scheme—bright yellow with black roofs—which is shared only with Carol Stream, another department in DuPage County. While Carol Stream transitioned to a black-over-red paint job several years ago, Hinsdale has held on to its original look for many years. However, this tradition began to change in 2008 when the department received its newest apparatus: a Spartan/Rosenbauer/Metz Raptor tower ladder. This unit was painted in a black-over-red scheme, marking a shift from their long-standing yellow-and-black design.
Interestingly, there's one other local department that operates a similar type of aerial device—the Countryside Fire Protection District in Division 4 (Lake County). Their tower ladder, also a Spartan/Rosenbauer/Metz model, is mounted on an HME chassis and features a white roof. Though both units are built on short, single-axle chassis, their color schemes and designs set them apart. Hinsdale’s decision to update its tower ladder reflects a broader trend in the fire service, where departments often modernize their fleets to align with current standards or aesthetic preferences.
This color scheme is unique to the area but does not appear to be around for too much longer.
