Scott Nacheman recently discovered the FDNY Rescue 5, one of the last remaining rescue trucks from the World Trade Center on 9/11, being restored in Northbrook as part of the Rescue Remembrance Project. Earlier, we shared stories about the first unit acquired, X-FDNY R-4, which you can read here, here, and here.
According to the Rescue Remembrance Project:
"In December 2011, the project acquired the final Rescue truck from 9/11—Rescue 5. The vehicle was transported to our Chicago facility and is currently undergoing a full restoration. It will be unveiled at FDIC in Indianapolis this month.
Rescue 5 has recently been repainted by Capital Truck Body in Cicero and is now at MPC Lighting in Northbrook for new lighting installation. Jacquette Custom Lettering is handling all the striping and hand-painting of the original artwork that once adorned the truck.
The goal is to restore the truck as closely as possible to its original condition, preserving its history and significance."
This project is more than just a restoration—it's a tribute to the brave men and women who served on 9/11. Each truck tells a story, and Rescue 5 is a powerful reminder of resilience, sacrifice, and the importance of remembering our past.
