Although car sales in the Chinese market have increased by 10% annually, many local manufacturers are expected to announce that 2014 results are the worst in years. Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd., regarded as a rising star, expects a net profit of 2% in 2014, which will be the first year-on-year decline in the company's net profit since 2008. Geely Automobile Holdings Co., Ltd. warned that net profit fell by about 50% last year, the first year-on-year decline since 2002. Geely's parent company owns the Swedish Volvo brand. For the decline in net profit, Great Wall Motor explained that the research and development costs are too large, Geely Automobile said that because the company's overall car sales decreased by 24%.
According to government data, the market share of Chinese domestic brand passenger cars in China's domestic market in 2014 was 38%, down from 46% in 2010. The market share of local car brands in the domestic market has dropped from 31% to 22%.
Foreign automakers are starting to introduce more affordable models and enter the last "fortress" of the Chinese auto market. The affluence of life has made Chinese consumers favor foreign-designed cars that are considered safer and more fashionable. In addition, five years ago, China also cut subsidies to help local brands.
Chinese local auto companies are working hard to narrow the gap in quality with foreign brands, but still not as good as the latter. According to a quality survey conducted by JD Power & Associates last year, there are 131 problems per 100 Chinese brand cars, down from 155 in 2013; compared to 95 problems per 100 foreign brand cars.
At the same time, more and more Chinese cities are restricting the number of new license plates in response to congestion and pollution problems, and some cities have adopted license plate auction systems. Analysts and automakers believe that such restrictions will lead consumers to buy bigger, more expensive cars, and local brands are also affected.
Industry observers said that a large number of local car companies will be eliminated in the next three to five years. Smaller brands such as Hafei, Meiya, and Shuanghuan are now discontinued.
