Coal-to-olefin catalysts will usher in market opportunities

In the next five years, China will form a coal-to-olefin (MTO) production capacity of 12 million tons/year, and the annual consumption of catalyst will reach about 12,000 tons, which means that the catalyst market will exceed RMB 2 billion. By then, the catalyst demand will far exceed the existing domestic supply capacity, and the catalyst industry will usher in a good market opportunity. At the fourth symposium on coal-to-olefins technology that ended on November 16, the Asian Chemicals Consulting made the above forecast.

The catalyst plays an important role in the selectivity, conversion and yield of light olefins in the process of methanol to olefins. Methanol to olefins generally use fluidized bed reactors and SAPO-34 molecular sieve catalysts. According to published data, the consumption of catalysts for 1 ton of olefin products is about 1 kg, and the consumption of a typical 600,000 ton/year MTO plant is 600 tons/year. The continuous development of the coal-to-olefins industry will inevitably increase the demand for catalysts. Yue Guo, vice president of China Shenhua Coal-to-oil Chemicals Co., Ltd., said that currently there are 26 companies in the country that are currently preparing or are planning to build coal-to-olefins/methanol to olefins projects with a total capacity of around 15 million tons, which will be released before 2020 at the latest. Among them, there are 18 companies using the DMTO technology of Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 5 companies adopt Sinopec SMTO technology, and 3 use UOP's MTO technology. These three major technologies are the mainstream of methanol-to-olefin technology.

It is understood that the current DMTO catalyst is mainly provided by Zhengda Energy Materials (Dalian) Co., Ltd.; SMTO catalyst was developed by Shanghai Petrochemical Research Institute and provided by Sinopec Catalyst Company; UOP's MTO catalyst is mainly from UOP America. The catalysts of Zhengda Energy Materials have been successfully commercialized in the world's first set of coal-to-olefins projects in Baotou, Baotou. The company has strategic cooperation with Dalian Institute of Chemical Industry, and has exclusive production and sales rights for DMTO catalysts. Currently, it has a capacity of 2,000 tons/year. Sinopec Catalysts Shanghai Branch has established a 1,500-ton/year SMTO catalyst production facility in the Shanghai Chemical Industry Park, and successfully delivered 170 tons of catalyst to Zhongyuan Petrochemical's 600,000-ton/year methanol-based 200,000-ton/year olefin project in September. Completed the first SMTO catalyst production task.

In addition, the self-developed catalyst of Shenhua was successfully tested in Baotou Coal-to-olefin plant in the first half of this year. Tianjin Zhongzhi Technology Co., Ltd. has also developed a new generation of methanol to olefins ZMTO catalyst, 1 ton of catalyst can produce 3,000 tons of olefins, has not yet achieved large-scale production.

According to industry sources, with the increase of coal-to-olefins projects, the competition in the olefin industry will become increasingly fierce, and the requirements for catalysts will also be further enhanced. Catalysts that are more cost-competitive, more active, more selective, and more wear-resistant will be welcomed by the market.
