From The Chicago Tribune:
A historic Chamber of Commerce building in west suburban Lyons, once a well-known landmark, suffered severe fire damage overnight, according to local officials. The two-story structure at 3901 Joliet Ave. caught fire around 2:30 a.m. and was fully extinguished by 6 a.m.
Fire Chief Gordon Nord told reporters that when firefighters arrived, flames were already visible from the first-floor windows. “It was overwhelming. We had to pull everyone out and switch to a defensive strategy,†he said. The building, which has been vacant for years, is now expected to be demolished due to the extent of the damage.
From CBS Chicago:
No one was injured in the overnight fire that destroyed one of Lyons’ most recognizable landmarks. The abandoned Chamber of Commerce building on Joliet Avenue, known for its ornate design and castle-like towers, was set ablaze around 2:30 a.m. Though it had electricity, gas service had been disconnected for some time, according to Fire Chief Gordon Nord.
The fire raged for nearly four hours before being brought under control. Nord described the situation as extremely challenging, with heavy flames and difficult-to-reach areas causing significant problems. One of the turrets on the building collapsed during the fire. As of early Friday, the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. However, given the severe damage, officials have confirmed that the building will need to be torn down.
No injuries were reported, but the loss of this historic structure has left many in the community in shock. Local residents expressed sadness over the destruction of a piece of their town's history.
Photos from the scene by Brad Bartley capture the devastation, showing the once-proud building reduced to charred remains.
