Landmark building burns in Lyons, 11-22-13

From The Chicago Tribune: A historic Chamber of Commerce building in west suburban Lyons, which had stood as a local landmark for decades, was severely damaged in a fire that broke out overnight. Officials confirmed the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. at the two-story structure located at 3901 Joliet Ave. The fire was finally brought under control by 6 a.m. Fire Chief Gordon Nord told reporters that when firefighters arrived, flames were already visible from the first-floor windows. “It really overpowered us,” he said. “We pulled everyone out and shifted to a defensive strategy.” Nord also confirmed that the building is now deemed unsafe and will need to be demolished. From CBS Chicago: No injuries were reported in the early morning fire that destroyed one of Lyons’ most recognizable landmarks. The once-vacant Chamber of Commerce building on Joliet Avenue caught fire around 2:30 a.m. The structure, a two-story ivory-colored building from the early 1900s, featured ornate doorways and castle-like towers. Though it had been empty for years, it remained a cherished part of the town’s history. According to Fire Chief Gordon Nord, the building still had electricity, but gas service had been disconnected for some time. Firefighters spent nearly four hours battling the blaze, which caused significant damage. “We had heavy fire coming from the first-floor windows and a lot of fire in the tin ceiling, creating a lot of voids,” Nord explained. “It really overwhelmed us.” During the fire, the top of one of the turret-like structures collapsed. As of Friday morning, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. However, with the level of destruction, officials have determined that the building cannot be saved.
