Excerpts from the journal times.com:
(Word count: 507)The Burlington Rescue Squad is set to disband at the end of the year due to rising call volumes and a significant drop in volunteer participation. This decision will shift the responsibility of emergency rescue services to the City of Burlington Fire Department. Officials from the Town of Burlington are currently in discussions with the city about a potential contract for EMS services after December 31st. Both areas have their own fire departments, but the city's department is planning to expand its staffing by hiring three full-time and two part-time firefighters/EMS personnel. This will bring the total paid staff to five full-time, twelve part-time, and one part-time administrative assistant, while still relying on volunteer firefighters.
It seems likely that the town will enter into a contract with the city to provide rescue services. The rescue squad currently has around 20 members, and some may choose to join the city fire department or other local volunteer organizations. This transition could help maintain critical emergency response coverage for the community.
Founded in 1946 as a nonprofit by the Burlington Rotary Club, the volunteer rescue squad has been handling between 1,300 and 1,600 emergency calls annually in recent years. At its peak, it also served parts of Dover, Kenosha County, and Walworth County. However, the board recently concluded that continuing operations was no longer viable.
In April, the rescue squad and city fire department announced they were exploring a merger. The squad had considered focusing only on the town’s needs, but last week it was decided that this approach wasn’t feasible. As a result, the squad will be winding down its operations entirely.
Some of the rescue squad’s equipment will be transferred to both the city and town fire departments, while the remaining gear will be donated to other departments across the state that require assistance. This move aims to ensure that resources are not wasted and continue to serve the broader community.
