The *Daily Herald* recently published a heartwarming story about the Prospect Heights Fire District’s annual holiday initiative, where they brought joy to low-income families in their community:
Santa Claus wasn’t just busy wrapping gifts this year — he was out on the road, delivering toys and clothes to kids in need. On Monday, Santa made special visits to children in Prospect Heights, riding along with firefighters and police officers as part of an annual event organized by local emergency services.
This year, the fire department and police worked together to provide gifts and clothing for 23 children from seven different families. The kids were all recommended by social workers from Elementary School District 23 and Wheeling School District 21. In addition to the toys, the program also included financial support for an elderly resident to help with holiday meals.
The effort was made possible through collaboration with several local organizations, including the police department, city staff, the mayor’s office, the park district, the Prospect Heights Lions Club, and the Garden Club. Local businesses like Lakeridge Builders, Heights Body and Motor Works, Fries Automotive, Player’s Pub & Grill, Union Ale House, Rocky Vanders, and Wheel-Inn Body and Motor Works also contributed generously.
Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Jones emphasized that the partnership helped raise more funds and bring more people into the cause. Together, the community raised $7,500 to make the holidays brighter for those in need.
Kathy Nowicki, executive director of the Prospect Heights Park District, said the Secret Santa Committee saw the project as a meaningful way to support families with basic needs and spread some holiday cheer.
While the gifts weren’t extravagant, they were thoughtful and practical. Most of the children received clothing, shoes, boots, and winter coats, with each child also getting one toy.
“We’re in the business of helping people,†Jones said. “This is just another way we can give back and make a difference during the holidays.â€
It’s a touching reminder of how community efforts can come together to lift up those who need it most — especially during the holiday season.
Thanks, Dan.
