The *Daily Herald* recently published a heartwarming story about the Prospect Heights Fire District’s efforts to bring joy to low-income families during the holiday season.
Santa Claus took a rare break from his usual duties at the North Pole on Monday to make special toy and clothing deliveries to children in the community. The event, which took place aboard an ambulance, was part of an annual tradition led by local firefighters and police officers.
This year, the initiative aimed to lift the spirits of families who were struggling financially. Firefighters and police officers worked together to purchase gifts and clothes for 23 children from seven different households. These families were identified through recommendations from social workers in Prospect Heights, including those from Elementary School District 23 and Wheeling School District 21.
In addition to the toys and clothes, the team also provided financial support for an elderly resident to help with holiday meals.
To make this effort possible, firefighters collaborated with several local organizations such as the police department, city staff, the mayor’s office, the park district, the Prospect Heights Lions Club, and the Garden Club. Local businesses also played a big role, including Lakeridge Builders, Heights Body and Motor Works, Fries Automotive, Player’s Pub & Grill, Union Ale House, Rocky Vanders, and Wheel-Inn Body and Motor Works in Wheeling.
Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Jones expressed pride in the collaboration, saying, “We were able to raise more money and get a lot more people involved that way.†Thanks to these efforts, the community raised $7,500 to help make holiday wishes come true for many children in need.
Kathy Nowicki, executive director of the Prospect Heights Park District, added, “Everyone involved in the Secret Santa Committee recognized that this was an opportunity to assist community families with basic needs. Plus, it puts smiles on the faces of all the children when Santa makes the family delivery.â€
While the gifts weren’t extravagant, they were exactly what the children needed—clothes, shoes, boots, and winter coats. Each child also received one toy, making the experience meaningful and personal.
Jones emphasized that the mission goes beyond just giving gifts. “We’re in the business of helping people,†he said. “This is just an extension of that. It just feels good to be able to give and make the holidays bright for families falling on hard times.â€
It’s a touching reminder of how community efforts can make a real difference during the holiday season.
Thanks, Dan.
