Silicon Valley is launching an optical zoom lens unit that is under development, which can make the interior of a smartphone thin enough and not stand out when used. DynaOptics has been using this device for two years and it is based on an Alvarez lens, a special-shaped lens that produces an optical zoom through the lateral movement of two lenses.
Optical zoom will produce higher quality images than the digital zoom currently used in mobile phones, but its inclusion in smartphones has hindered the huge shots needed. The lens is large because the vertical distance between the lenses when zooming needs to be changed, as can be seen in a small camera, where the length of the lens is related to the change in zoom. And this movement is not a camera issue, it is not suitable for use in a thin smartphone. Some companies have attempted to commercialize smartphones with larger lenses, but all have failed.
DynaOptics is rapidly moving toward engineering samples and is currently scheduled for March 2015. These samples will allow for volume production in advance and are scheduled to be released by the end of next year. If all the mobile phone manufacturers' first mobile phone package sale is planned, it will be realized in 2016.
