According to the agreement, IHI will exclusively supply the A123 battery system and modules needed in the Japanese transportation system market. A123 will create more business opportunities in the Japanese market through IHI, and will also make IHI a value-added distributor.

IHI was established in 1853 and has now grown into a full-scale system development and manufacturing company. Many of its products range from aerospace science to industrial machinery. IHI said: "Since we first established a partnership with A123 in 2009, we have discovered that A123's advanced battery technology is in great demand in electric vehicles and other fields. A123's lithium-ion batteries are not only high-performance but also durable. Durable, I believe that this investment in A123 will also help us develop our business in Japan and even in the world." It is reported that IHI will invest US$25 million in A123 and A123 will grant its battery system technology business license.
