New fire chief in Aurora

Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:

Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner officially recommended Gary Krienitz, a 19-year veteran of the Aurora Fire Department, as the city’s next fire chief on Thursday. Krienitz, 43, is set to take over on February 20, just one day after current Chief John Lehman retires. Weisner highlighted that Krienitz was selected from a pool of six highly qualified internal candidates, showcasing the strong leadership culture that Lehman has fostered during his tenure.

The announcement was made in the main bay of the Central Fire Station downtown, where several fire department leaders, firefighters, members of the Aurora Police Department, aldermen, and members of the public were in attendance. The Aurora City Council will need to approve the appointment, with a special meeting of the committee of the whole scheduled for 5 p.m. on January 26 to discuss the recommendation.

Krienitz reflected on his journey, saying, “When I was in high school at Waubonsie Valley, a friend gave me an opportunity to ride with Medic 4 at Fire Station 4. Little did I know that brief ride-along would have such an impact on who I would become. Now to be considered for the position as the next chief of the Aurora Fire Department is such a great honor.”

In 2014, Krienitz was named firefighter of the year in Aurora. Alongside Pvt. Jason Larson and Pvt. Dan Murphy, he received the department’s highest award for his heroic efforts during a dangerous motel fire that saved two lives. His dedication and bravery have been recognized time and again throughout his career.

A member of the National Fire Protection Association and the International Association of Arson Investigators, Krienitz holds more than 15 certifications, including roles such as certified evidence technician, rescue specialist, arson investigator, emergency medical technician, juvenile fire setter counselor, and personal trainer. He has completed over 50 training courses through various agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Illinois Fire Service Institute, the Illinois State Police Academy for Arson, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. Krienitz earned his fire science degree from the College of DuPage and served as a team leader with the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force.

Krienitz expressed deep gratitude to Chief Lehman for his mentorship throughout his career, calling him a guiding force. He also thanked all the firefighters in Aurora, whom he described as smart, dedicated, and excellent. Their support, he said, has always been a source of strength and motivation.

Thanks Dan
