Excerpts from ChicagoTribune.com:
Aurora Mayor Tom Weisner made a significant announcement on Thursday, recommending Gary Krienitz, a 19-year veteran of the Aurora Fire Department, as the next fire chief. The decision marks a major step in the transition of leadership within the department, as current Chief John Lehman is set to retire on February 19.
Krienitz, who is 43 years old, will officially take over the role on February 20. Weisner highlighted that Krienitz was selected from a pool of six highly qualified internal candidates, a reflection of the strong leadership culture that Lehman has fostered throughout his tenure.
The mayor made the announcement during a public event held in the main bay of the Central Fire Station downtown. The gathering included numerous fire department officials, firefighters, members of the Aurora Police Department, city aldermen, and members of the public, showing broad support for the decision.
Before taking office, the Aurora City Council must formally approve the appointment. A special meeting of the committee of the whole will be held on January 26 at 5 p.m. to discuss the proposal.
Reflecting on his journey, Krienitz shared a personal story: “When I was in high school at Waubonsie Valley, a friend gave me an opportunity to ride with Medic 4 at Fire Station 4. Little did I know that brief ride-along would have such a lasting impact on who I would become.†He added, “Now to be considered for the position of the next chief of the Aurora Fire Department is a great honor.â€
Krienitz has a long history of excellence within the department. In 2014, he was named Firefighter of the Year in Aurora. Alongside Pvt. Jason Larson and Pvt. Dan Murphy, he received the department’s highest award for his heroic efforts during a dangerous motel fire that saved two lives.
A dedicated professional, Krienitz is a member of the National Fire Protection Association and the International Association of Arson Investigators. He holds over 15 certifications, including roles such as certified evidence technician, rescue specialist, arson investigator, emergency medical technician, juvenile fire setter counselor, and personal trainer. He has completed more than 50 training courses through various agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Illinois Fire Service Institute, the Illinois State Police Academy for Arson, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
Krienitz earned his fire science degree from the College of DuPage and served as a team leader with the DuPage County Fire Investigation Task Force. He also expressed deep gratitude to Chief Lehman, whom he credited with mentoring him throughout his career. “I owe so much to him,†he said. “I also want to thank all the firefighters in Aurora, who have always supported me. They are smart, excellent, and truly the heart of this department.â€
