3-Alarm fire in Leaf River

A 150-year-old barn in Leaf River was completely consumed by fire around 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015. The historic structure, located at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, had been a family-owned landmark for generations. It was built in 1844 and stored hay, feed, and equipment. Nancy Stukenberg, who owns the property, said her three horses were safely kept in a nearby feedlot at the time of the fire and are unharmed. "Everything else can be replaced," she told reporters. Firefighters from ten local departments worked through challenging conditions, including high winds, slippery roads, and deep slush caused by a recent winter storm. Despite these obstacles, they managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes. No injuries were reported among people or animals, though the cause of the fire remained under investigation as of Tuesday. The blaze prompted a significant emergency response, with mutual aid from several neighboring towns. Units involved included engines, trucks, ambulances, and chiefs from Byron, Win–Ber–Sew, Stillman Valley, German Valley, Mount Morris, Forreston, Oregon, and Polo. Radioman911.com reported that the call for help included multiple units such as the Rock Engine, Forreston Ambulance, and others, highlighting the coordinated effort to contain the fire. Local residents expressed shock at the loss of the iconic barn, which had stood as a symbol of the town’s history. While the fire destroyed the building, it also served as a reminder of the community's resilience and the importance of teamwork during emergencies.
