3-Alarm fire in Leaf River

A 150-year-old barn in Leaf River was completely consumed by flames around 3 p.m. on Monday, December 28, 2015. The fire, which destroyed the historic structure located at the southeast corner of State Route 72 and Main Street, posed a major challenge for firefighters due to high winds, icy conditions, and deep slush from a recent winter storm. Despite these difficulties, crews from 10 local departments managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby homes, saving two houses in the process. No injuries were reported among people or animals. Nancy Stukenberg, whose family had owned the barn since its construction in 1844, said her three horses were safely housed in a nearby feedlot when the fire broke out. “Everything else can be replaced,” she told Saukvalley.com. The barn had stored hay, feed, and equipment, and its destruction marked the loss of a significant piece of local history. Fire Chief Steve Shelton of Leaf River noted that the cause of the fire had not yet been determined as of Tuesday. Emergency response included mutual aid from several neighboring areas. Units involved included the Byron Engine, Truck, and Chief; Win-Ber-Sew RIT; Stillman Valley Engine, German Valley Engine and Ambulance; Mount Morris Truck and Squad; Forreston Squad; Oregon Engine and Tender; Mount Morris Tender, Ambulance, and Chief; German Valley Tender; Oregon Cascade; and Polo RIT. Additional units included the Lynn Scott Rock Engine and Forreston Ambulance. This coordinated effort helped contain the blaze and protect surrounding properties, showcasing the importance of regional cooperation during large-scale emergencies.
