On Thursday, February 4, 2021, around 8:20 a.m., firefighters from Arlington Heights, Palatine, Buffalo Grove, and Mount Prospect were called to 1929 N Spruce Terrace in Arlington Heights after reports of a house fire. As the crews made their way to the scene, they were informed that two residents might still be inside the home, and neighbors had mentioned that the property was in a hoarder condition.
Upon arrival, Engine 2 confirmed flames on the rear side of the house and immediately connected to a hydrant located down the street. Palatine Engine 83 then set up in front of the residence. Firefighters entered the structure to conduct a search for the occupants and successfully located two adults. Both individuals were quickly assisted by paramedics and transported by ambulance for medical treatment.
The fire was fully extinguished within 15 minutes, but crews remained on site to address hot spots and smoldering materials scattered throughout the cluttered interior. Despite the efforts of first responders, it was later confirmed that neither of the two occupants who were rescued from the home survived the incident.
A video of the scene was captured and shared, offering a glimpse into the intensity of the fire. Additionally, several photographs from the event, taken by Larry Shapiro, are available for viewing. These images provide a visual record of the emergency response and the aftermath of the blaze.
This tragic event highlights the dangers associated with house fires, especially in homes with unsafe conditions. It also underscores the critical work of emergency personnel who respond under challenging circumstances to save lives. The community is now coming together to support the families affected by this devastating loss.
High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from the monomer ethylene. HDPE is commonly recycled, and has the number "2" as its resin identification code.It is sometimes called "alkathene" or "polythene" when used for HDPE pipes. With a high strength-to-density ratio, HDPE is used in the production of plastic bottles, corrosion-resistant piping, geomembranes and plastic lumber.
