Marine black box

A subsidiary of Peninsula Eastern Shipping, which is Europe's largest shipping company, launched the production of its first advanced marine "black box" on March 26, 1992. This innovative device was designed to provide crucial evidence in cases of unexplained ship disappearances at sea. The new voyage data recorder functions similarly to the black boxes used in aviation, continuously capturing audio, radar, and other critical data around the clock. It uses an eight-track tape system to record not only the sounds from the ship’s engine control room but also the ambient noise of the vessel as it travels. Alongside sound, the device simultaneously logs date, time, compass direction, and radar information. All components are housed within a highly durable, corrosion-resistant, and waterproof casing measuring half a meter in size. The black box itself weighs 90 kilograms and is typically installed in the ship’s wheelhouse for easy access. Additionally, the recording tape can be stored in a separate, fireproof, and waterproof floatation unit placed on the deck. If the ship sinks, the pressure of seawater will automatically trigger the floatation device to rise to the surface. These units are equipped with electronic beacons to assist in locating the device, making it easier for search teams to recover vital information. This technology marked a significant advancement in maritime safety and accident investigation, helping to uncover the causes of shipwrecks and improve future navigation practices.
