The new voyage data recorder operates continuously, capturing audio, radar, and other essential data onto a tape around the clock. It was inspired by the black boxes used in aviation, but adapted for maritime use. The robust unit employs an eight-track tape system to record all sounds from the ship’s engine control room and the ambient noise aboard the vessel as it travels. Alongside sound, it also logs important information such as dates, time, compass direction, and radar data simultaneously.
The entire system is housed in a highly durable, corrosion-resistant, and waterproof casing measuring half a meter in size. Weighing 90 kilograms, the black box is typically installed in the ship’s wheelhouse for easy access and monitoring. Additionally, the recording tape can be stored in a separate, fireproof, and waterproof floatable container placed on the deck. If the ship sinks, the external water pressure will trigger the float to rise to the surface, making it easier to locate. These units are also equipped with electronic beacons that assist in tracking their position, significantly improving the chances of recovery in the event of a disaster.
This innovation marked a major step forward in maritime safety, offering a reliable tool for accident investigations and enhancing the overall security of ocean travel.
