We previously mentioned that the Tinley Park Fire Department has placed an order for a new aerial ladder truck, marking a significant step in modernizing their equipment. This development has sparked interest, especially with recent coverage from TribLocal highlighting how the community continues to support the department through long-standing fundraising traditions.
The article discusses the financial arrangements behind the purchase of the new $850,000 ladder truck. While the Village Board approved the funding, a large portion of the cost is being covered by the Tinley Park Fire Department Association. This group, which has been raising funds since 1902, is covering half of the expense—$425,000—through events like their annual dinner dance and other charitable drives.
Trustee Brian Maher, who leads the Public Safety Committee, expressed his appreciation for the association’s role in keeping costs manageable for taxpayers. “It’s helped us keep costs to the taxpayers down, so we certainly appreciate all the individual contributions towards that,†he said.
The fire department, which now employs over 100 part-time firefighters, originally operated as a volunteer force. Back in 1901, the department relied entirely on community donations to fund its operations. Even after becoming a municipal department, the support from residents has remained strong, thanks in large part to the association’s ongoing efforts.
Firefighter and association president Mike Hughes reflected on this tradition. “It kind of goes back to when they were running a true volunteer fire department and they had to raise money to buy equipment,†he said. “That spirit has never left.â€
The first Annual Firefighters Dance, held in 1902, raised just $15.15, but today it remains one of the biggest fundraisers for the department. The event is still held every January, drawing in locals who continue to support the cause.
“We’re a very blessed organization,†Hughes added. “It’s a great town and it’s got a lot of pride. What the community does for us, it’s kind of amazing. It really is.â€
Beyond the ladder truck, the association regularly funds essential equipment, including fire engines and other critical tools. Their most recent major purchase was a fire engine in 2007, costing $401,000. Because of such large expenses, the village often shares the cost with the association. Without this support, Maher noted, the department would have no choice but to rely fully on tax dollars.
