Over the past few weeks, I've been working on updating some sections of our local fire department archives. One of the highlights is a newly added photo gallery dedicated to the Stone Park Fire Department, located in MABAS Division 20. This gallery takes you on a visual journey through their impressive history, starting all the way back in 1954. It's fascinating to see how their fleet has evolved over time, featuring iconic models from Darley and E-ONE, as well as a stunning custom-built Pirsch.
One particular piece of history that stands out is the story behind one of their current engines. This rig was brought in as an urgent replacement after a tragic accident on April 27, 2004. A collision involving a Stone Park engine and a Northlake engine—both responding to an emergency call—resulted in severe damage to a 2002 HME/Darley engine. Unfortunately, this incident also claimed the life of Jeffrey Bergstrom, a part-time firefighter and paramedic for Stone Park. His contributions didn't end there; he was also a valued member of the Chicago Fire Department’s Ambulance Company 44. The Illinois Fire Service Institute has documented this accident, including vivid scene photos, and it's clear how deeply his loss was felt across multiple departments. Firefighters nationwide paid their respects during a memorable funeral procession and a touching memorial service held in Hillside, Illinois.
