From April to July this year, the State Administration of Safety Supervision organised on-site inspections and surveys of 41 gold mining companies in 8 provinces (regions, cities) across the country. The inspection and research found that the dust concentration of 95% of the company's workplaces tested exceeds the national standard. Among them, the total dust concentration in the extracting session is over 57 times the maximum, the dust concentration is 13 times higher than the standard; the total dust concentration in the crushing section is 27 times higher than the standard; the total dust concentration in the ball milling stage is 8 times higher than the standard.
The content of free silica in dust is high. The content of free silica in the workplace dust of the tested enterprises exceeds 50%, the lowest is 55%, the highest is 95.5%, and the average content is 70.1%. This results in multiple occupational diseases such as silicosis.
In recent years, incidents caused by dust hazards in gold mining have occurred from time to time. For example, in the Gulang County of Gansu Province in 2011, migrant workers working at gold mines in Subei County caused pneumoconiosis, causing 173 people to suffer from silicosis, and 3 of them died. Nearly 500 villagers in Shangshan Township of Xiushui County in Jiangxi Province suffered from pneumoconiosis due to gold mining.
