House fire in Buffalo Grove, 9-9-17

On Saturday morning, September 9, 2017, just before 6:30 a.m., Buffalo Grove police and fire units were dispatched to 96 University Drive after a passerby reported seeing smoke coming from the residence. Police officers arrived first and began ringing the doorbell and knocking on the doors in an attempt to wake the homeowners. Arlington Heights Engine 4 and Buffalo Grove Tower 25 quickly responded, arriving within minutes and stretching a hose line toward the front door. As they made entry, thick smoke was visible escaping from the second floor, while the first floor was heavily filled with smoke. Once the door was breached, a heavy flow of smoke pushed out from the front entrance. The incident was upgraded to a Code 4 working fire, and two additional ambulances were sent to the scene after reports indicated that three people might be inside the house. Firefighters worked swiftly to control the blaze, but as the situation unfolded, neighbors informed authorities that the cars in the driveway did not belong to the residents, and the family's car was missing. A primary and secondary search confirmed that the only occupants at the time were two cats. Despite their efforts, firefighters were unable to save the animals. The fire caused significant damage to the home, but no human injuries were reported. Photos from the scene captured the intensity of the fire, showing thick smoke pouring from the building and firefighters working to contain the flames. The incident remains under investigation.
