The McCook Fire Department has been battling a large mulch fire since 8:00 AM at 5300 Lawndale. The fire is located on the backside of a massive mulch pile, where access is limited, making it challenging for firefighters to reach the source directly. Throughout the day, crews relied on a tanker shuttle system to supply water to the scene.
As the afternoon progressed, the department decided to release the tankers and called in additional resources from Chicago. A hose wagon (6-1-2) and a turret wagon (6-7-6) were dispatched. The new 6-7-6 unit has arrived on site, marking what appears to be its first deployment. This advanced equipment is expected to significantly aid in controlling the fire.
Several volunteers and local residents have been present at the scene throughout the day. Photos submitted by Josh Boyajian and Tim Olk have already provided a visual update on the situation. More images are anticipated later tonight as the operation continues.
Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain the blaze, which is expected to remain active for several more hours. The community is closely watching the developments, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
