**WABCO Opens First China Production Base in Qingdao, Strengthening Global Presence**
Qingdao, China – October 31, 2007 – WABCO Automotive Control Systems (NYSE: WBC), a global leader in electronic braking, stability, suspension, and variable speed control systems, officially opened its first wholly-owned production facility in Qingdao today. The event was attended by WABCO’s Global CEO Gu Jieke, Asia Pacific President Dr. Liu Liang, key customers, and partners from across the region.
The Qingdao plant marks a significant milestone for WABCO as it becomes the company's primary manufacturing hub in China. It will produce advanced commercial vehicle control systems, including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), air compressors, and other critical brake components, serving both local and international markets. With 240 employees currently on staff, the factory is expected to expand to over 1,000 workers by 2012, reflecting WABCO’s long-term commitment to the Chinese market.
At the opening ceremony, CEO Gu Jieke emphasized the strategic importance of China as the world’s largest and fastest-growing commercial vehicle market. “With output surpassing that of Europe and North America, China offers immense opportunities,†he said. “We are dedicated to bringing our cutting-edge technology and products into the country while investing in production and human resources to meet growing demand.â€
The new facility also represents a step forward in WABCO’s global supply chain strategy. By implementing Six Sigma and Lean Production principles, the plant aims to achieve high-quality output while reducing costs. This initiative aligns with WABCO’s mission to support China’s efforts in improving road safety and efficiency.
Since 1981, WABCO has been at the forefront of developing braking technologies, collaborating with Mercedes-Benz to create the first ABS system for trucks, buses, and trailers. In 2005, after China mandated ABS for commercial vehicles, WABCO became one of the first international manufacturers to enter this market.
Today, WABCO is one of the leading suppliers of ABS systems globally. Jiang Jie, Secretary of the Economic and Technological Development Zone of Qingdao, praised the company’s contribution to the region, stating, “WABCO’s presence brings advanced technology and management practices to China, significantly enhancing road safety and supporting the development of the automotive industry.â€
WABCO has been active in the Asia-Pacific region since 1977 and now operates five production facilities across the region. Its clients include major Chinese automakers like China National Heavy Duty Truck, FAW, Dongfeng, and Yutong, as well as Japanese and Korean brands such as Nissan Diesel, Hino, Isuzu, and Hyundai Motor.
