Shanchai Heavy Industry MAN9l21/31 Diesel Engine Developed Successfully

The highly-regarded MAN9L21/31 diesel engine was successfully developed by Shaanxi Diesel Engine Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. This marked a significant milestone in China's shipbuilding industry. The first four generator sets equipped with this engine were successfully loaded and delivered to Dalian Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Group Co., Ltd. As a result, the 4250TEU container ship being exported will now be powered by domestically produced generator sets, showcasing a major step forward in localizing critical ship components. In recent years, while focusing on the development of its core shipbuilding operations, China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSSC) has actively worked to enhance the quality and efficiency of its auxiliary ship equipment manufacturing. To further improve the localization rate of ship auxiliary systems, CSSC Heavy Industry signed a production license agreement with German company MANB&W in early 2004. This agreement allowed the introduction of four types of marine auxiliary engines, including the L21/31 model, as a key project for the group. Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. was assigned to produce these engines. The L21/31 series diesel engine is one of the flagship products of MANB&W, known for its advanced technology, compact design, and high reliability. It has become a popular choice in both land-based and marine power generation applications, offering great potential in the global market. Following the signing of the licensing agreement, the localization of the 9L21/31 diesel engine by Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry was completed by the end of April 2006. After assembling and testing the first unit, it successfully passed the inspection by the British Lloyd’s Register (LR) on June 11, and received approval from the user. While accelerating the localization process of the L21/31 engines, Shaanxi Chaijian Heavy Industries proactively explored market opportunities and aimed to bring marine auxiliary machinery to the market quickly. With strong support from CSSC, the company signed a contract in early 2005 with Dalian Shipbuilding to supply 40 sets of 9L21/31 diesel engines for 10 4250TEU export container ships. Today, Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industries has over 100 orders for marine auxiliary engines, including 72 units of the L21/31 model. Marine auxiliary equipment has now become a new driver of growth for the company. The successful development of the 9L21/31 diesel engine demonstrates how Shaanxi Chai Heavy Industry has transformed its strategy from a single focus on mainframe production to a balanced approach that includes both main and auxiliary engines. It also highlights the progress made by CSSC Heavy Industries through the integration of self-developed technologies and foreign expertise, significantly improving the localization of ship auxiliary equipment.
