Reporter Li Lei reports: Every year in mid-March, the Turkmen people celebrate their traditional Spring Festival, a time of joy and cultural significance. This year, the celebration took on an even more special meaning with the opening of the new railway line connecting Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, to Tashauz, a key city in the northern part of the country. The event brought together locals and officials, marking a major milestone in the nation's infrastructure development.
The ceremony was highlighted by the presence of Chinese-made diesel locomotives and passenger cars, which immediately caught the attention of the crowd. Turkmen President Niyazov personally boarded one of the trains and praised its comfort and design, calling it "beautiful and modern." These advanced rail vehicles were produced by two Chinese manufacturers: the Hebei Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Factory and the Sichuan Ziyang Locomotive Manufacturing Plant. The positive reception has led the Turkmen government to announce that it will continue purchasing Chinese rail equipment in the future.
In addition to rail transport, Chinese oil and gas machinery has also gained significant popularity in Turkmenistan. Engineers working in the country’s oil and gas fields have shared their appreciation for the reliability, efficiency, and affordability of Chinese drilling and maintenance equipment. Over $100 million worth of such machinery has already been imported, and the government plans to maintain this trend in the coming years.
Currently, Turkmen Gas operates 50 drilling rigs and 60 workover rigs, with 10 of each imported from China and Russia. As the company prepares to upgrade the remaining 40 drilling rigs and 50 workover rigs, there is a growing opportunity for Chinese manufacturers to further expand their presence in the Turkmen market. This collaboration not only strengthens economic ties between the two countries but also highlights the increasing trust in Chinese technology and engineering capabilities.
