The strategic framework of Volvo China is closely aligned with Sweden’s broader global vision. From heavy construction machinery to core automotive innovation, every aspect reflects the advanced technological capabilities of Nordic countries. It's widely recognized that Swedes possess a unique ability to innovate in a practical and efficient manner.
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which traverses the thin air of the "Roof of the World," stands as a remarkable engineering achievement. Scheduled to open on July 1st, this railway crosses the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, where oxygen levels are only about 40% to 50% of those found at sea level. Simply standing or walking can be exhausting, let alone undertaking massive construction projects in such an extreme environment.
Despite these harsh conditions, Volvo Construction Equipment has proven itself capable of performing under the most challenging circumstances. Whether in dense rainforests, frozen tundras, scorching deserts, high-altitude mountains, vast forests, or deep underground, Volvo machines have consistently delivered reliable, safe, and efficient performance.
One of the most demanding projects for Volvo was the construction of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. This project involved building the world’s highest and longest plateau railway, stretching across one of the most remote and difficult terrains on Earth.
Tibet, located in western China, is a region of towering mountains and extreme altitudes. At 5,000 meters above sea level, temperatures can drop to -20°C, and the air contains only 40% to 50% of the oxygen found at lower elevations. The area covers over 1.2 million square kilometers, with just two people per square mile, making it one of the most sparsely populated regions on the planet.
The Qinghai-Tibet Railway project began in June 2001 and was completed in July 2006. Throughout the two main sections of the project, Volvo China’s construction equipment played a crucial role.
In the Yangbajain section, the Second Railway Construction Group, one of China’s largest construction companies, used Volvo machines to excavate tunnels and build the railway embankment. At an average altitude of 4,300 meters, they deployed five Volvo EC360BLC excavators and four Volvo G740 motor graders to handle the challenging terrain.
In the Amdo-Nagqu section, the 18th Railway Construction Bureau faced even more extreme conditions, working at nearly 5,000 meters above sea level. The project, which started in September 2002, used seven Volvo L180 wheel loaders, six Volvo EC290 BLC excavators, and eight Volvo EC210BLC excavators to move tons of frozen soil and gravel.
Operating in such conditions is extremely difficult, especially for machinery. However, both operators and project managers praised the performance of Volvo equipment, which outperformed competitors. This success was achieved through specific modifications made by Volvo to the engines, hydraulic systems, and brake accumulators before the equipment was shipped to Tibet.
Volvo’s experience in high-altitude projects in Chile and Peru provided valuable insights into optimizing equipment performance in extreme environments. Ensuring that machines function efficiently in such conditions is always a top priority. Feedback from the Tibetan project confirmed that Volvo equipment excelled under these tough conditions.
Beyond its technical achievements, the Qinghai-Tibet Railway has had a significant impact on the local economy. It has created over 100,000 jobs, improving the quality of life for people along the route in Qinghai and Tibet. The completion of the railway has also boosted tourism in western China, opening new opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange.
The opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway symbolizes hope and progress for Tibet, creating a “golden road†that will bring long-term benefits to the entire region. Behind this achievement, Volvo China demonstrated not only the power of high technology but also its commitment to environmental responsibility. (By Zhu Hong)
