According to foreign media reports, Ricardo plc and Roke Manor Research have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on September 6, 2017. Both parties are committed to developing new solutions to ensure automatic driving. Vehicles and connected vehicles are protected from cyber attacks.
The two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding on the Safety and Security of Automated Driving Networks
If you want to fully benefit from the benefits of connected vehicles and self-driving vehicles (CAVs), you must first ensure the vehicle's network security and provide corresponding product solutions. This is a basic requirement. Today, many connected vehicles use over the air technology to support their in-vehicle infotainment systems and maintenance. In the vehicle-mounted security system, users have adopted insurance-based surveillance technology and have adopted smart phone applications that can be directly connected to vehicle owners. With the new type of vehicles in the future, the proportion of CAV vehicles (through the driver assistance system for vehicle control and fully autonomous driving technologies) will gradually increase, but the chance of vehicles experiencing cyber attacks will also increase significantly.
Ricardo's cooperation with Rockman Research is aimed at achieving "one stop shop" design for the network security system and infrastructure in the automotive industry.
According to David Cole, Managing Director of Rockmanle Research, “The importance of designing and implementing CAV technology for self-driving vehicle in-vehicle infotainment systems, maintenance and navigation systems, and workshop communication systems (V2V) is Undoubtedly, because the above systems may incur malicious cyber attacks."
He also said: "The key is to integrate security elements into product design and prevent it from the initial source, so that later vacancy remedies can be avoided. Cooperation with Ricardo means the company will implement new tools, new Processes and provide life insurance schemes to enhance consumer credit for the safety of new smart vehicles."
The two companies have launched the UK 5StarS program to develop a 5-star type consumer rating framework, similar to the current EuroNCAP vehicle safety assessment. According to the relevant clauses of the recently announced memorandum of understanding, the two companies will provide other materials and resources under the framework of the 5StarS project to jointly develop products and services based on the synergy between the two companies' capabilities.
