The first self-owned 20-cubic-meter excavator was successfully trial-produced

After three months of operation, on June 27th, China's first large-scale excavator with full independent intellectual property rights, the WK-20 (20 cubic meters), successfully passed expert and user evaluation in Taiyuan. The panel of judges affirmed that the core technology of the excavator has reached an international advanced level, comparable to similar products globally. This milestone marks a significant step forward for China’s heavy machinery industry. Before this breakthrough, China had relied heavily on imported or joint-venture produced large excavators. In 1961, China developed its first 4-cubic-meter excavator based on a Soviet model, marking the beginning of domestic production. Over time, the company independently developed a 10-cubic-meter excavator and its improved version, the WK-10B, while also collaborating with U.S. company P&H to produce models like the 2300XP and 2800XP. These efforts increased the localization rate from 34% to over 80%. After more than two decades of absorbing foreign technologies and innovating, the company built up extensive technical and manufacturing expertise, laying the groundwork for developing large-scale mining excavators with independent intellectual property. Today, the company has accumulated over 1,000 types of excavators, holding a market share of more than 95%. Its products are widely used in open-pit mines, iron ore, non-ferrous metals, and construction materials across China, and have been exported to countries such as Pakistan and Vietnam. In 2005, Taizhong decided to independently develop the 20-cubic-meter WK-20 excavator, driven by the needs of Shenhua Zhugeer Energy Co., Ltd. and Shougang Mining Co., as well as national demand. During development, the team focused on achieving international standards, incorporating advanced AC variable frequency motors and control systems—replacing traditional thyristor power supplies and DC motors. This innovation ensured that the WK-20 met global benchmarks in performance and technology. In March 2006, the first 20-cubic-meter excavator with full independent intellectual property was officially put into service at Shenhua Zhugeer Energy Co., Ltd. As the company expanded its range to 27 and 35 cubic meters, mine managers and industry experts provided valuable feedback on design, process applicability, and after-sales service. Taizhong has long been a pioneer in adopting foreign technologies through technical cooperation. To meet China’s growing demand for large-scale mining equipment, the company has invested in foreign expertise, including hiring top engineers and quality consultants from abroad. It has also actively sought out international design firms, ensuring direct access to cutting-edge technologies. Through strong emphasis on independent innovation, Taizhong has upgraded its traditional products, broadened its service offerings, and enhanced competitiveness, building a solid foundation for sustainable growth. Recently, the company signed three contracts for 20-cubic-meter excavators with Huaneng Yimin Coal and Electricity Co., Ltd., two for 27-cubic-meter models with CLP Humei Group, and one for a 35-cubic-meter excavator with Shenhua Zhugeer Energy Co. Industry experts believe that the successful development of the WK-20 represents a new path for the localization of large open-pit mining equipment in China, showcasing the nation’s growing capability in advanced engineering and technological self-reliance.
