Freescale Introduces Entry-Level ColdFire® Core for Mass Market

Freescale Semiconductor has taken its ColdFire™ licensing program to the next level by making its 32-bit V1 ColdFire cores available to the embedded market through IPextreme, a leading specialist in semiconductor technology licensing. IPextreme recently launched its Core Store, a revolutionary platform that allows customers to access ColdFire core licenses online at a fraction of traditional costs. Now, developers can license the V1 ColdFire core for as little as $10,000, gaining access to a mature and continuously evolving microcontroller (MCU) architecture that has been driving innovation for over three decades. Aiden Mitchell, Manager of Freescale’s Microcontroller Solutions Group for Consumer and Industrial MCU Products, commented: “By offering the V1 ColdFire core at just $10,000, Freescale and IPextreme are providing an exceptionally affordable entry point into the ColdFire architecture. IPextreme’s innovative Core Store gives customers greater design freedom and flexibility, allowing them to develop solutions for various applications without the high costs and long lead times typically associated with traditional licensing models.” The Core Store is now the official channel for purchasing the V1 ColdFire core. Customers can easily browse and acquire licenses directly from the website with just a few clicks. Additionally, the platform offers a range of technology and support packages tailored to different project needs, giving users more control over their development process. Warren Savage, President and CEO of IPextreme, added: “The $10,000 single-use license for the V1 ColdFire core is a game-changer. It opens up new design possibilities for the entry-level 32-bit embedded market and represents a major step forward in making advanced processor technology more accessible. We’re thrilled to partner with Freescale on this groundbreaking licensing initiative.” Since 2006, Freescale has offered its ColdFire licensing program, initially distributing the V2 core through IPextreme. The collaboration continues today, with IPextreme acting as the go-to partner for SoC designers looking to integrate ColdFire cores with other functions on a single chip. This partnership has helped expand the reach of the ColdFire architecture across multiple industries. According to Tom Starnes, a processor analyst at Objective Analysis, “IPextreme is quickly becoming a one-stop shop for Freescale’s core technologies. With its long history and strong developer base, the ColdFire architecture is well-suited for low-cost ASIC designs. This move is sure to bring new opportunities to developers seeking affordable, high-performance embedded solutions.”
