Freescale Semiconductor has taken its ColdFire™ licensing program to the next level by introducing 32-bit V1 ColdFire cores to the embedded market through IPextreme, a leading specialist in semiconductor technology licensing. IPextreme’s newly launched Core Store offers an innovative business model that allows customers to access ColdFire core licenses online at a fraction of traditional costs. Now, developers can license the V1 ColdFire core for as little as $10,000, gaining access to a well-established and continuously evolving microcontroller (MCU) architecture that has been in development for over three decades.
Aiden Mitchell, Manager of Freescale’s Microcontroller Solutions Group for Consumer and Industrial MCU Products, commented, “By offering the V1 ColdFire core at such an affordable price point, Freescale and IPextreme are making the ColdFire architecture more accessible than ever. This not only lowers the barrier to entry but also empowers developers with greater design flexibility and freedom.â€
The Core Store platform enables customers to browse and acquire ColdFire core licenses with just a few clicks. Beyond simple access, users can also choose from various support packages tailored to their specific needs. This streamlined process eliminates the long sales cycles and high costs typically associated with traditional licensing models.
Warren Savage, President and CEO of IPextreme, emphasized the significance of this move: “Offering a single-use license for the V1 ColdFire core at $10,000 is a game-changer. It opens up new possibilities for the entry-level 32-bit embedded market and demonstrates our commitment to innovation in IP licensing.â€
Since launching its ColdFire licensing program in 2006, Freescale has worked closely with IPextreme to distribute both the V1 and V2 ColdFire cores. Through this partnership, IPextreme supports SoC designers who aim to integrate the ColdFire core with other functionalities on a single chip.
According to Tom Starnes, a processor analyst at Objective Analysis, “IPextreme has evolved into a one-stop shop for Freescale’s IP. With the ColdFire architecture’s long history and strong user base, this licensing model is a welcome relief for companies looking to incorporate it into their ASIC designs without breaking the bank.â€
